What PKGSmith does
PKGSmith is a native macOS application for building repeatable DMG and PKG installers. It gives developers, release engineers, and Mac administrators a project-based workflow for payloads, package metadata, scripts, signing settings, and output. Projects are stored as readable JSON-based .pkgsmith files, so packaging configuration can be reviewed, versioned, and reused instead of reconstructed for every release.
Why it exists
macOS packaging often starts as a collection of shell commands and becomes difficult to maintain when a product adds signing, notarization, scripts, multiple artifacts, or CI. PKGSmith keeps those decisions together and exposes the build steps through both the app and a build-only command-line interface. The goal is not to hide Apple’s packaging tools, but to make a correct release process easier to understand, repeat, and debug.
